Seasons Greetings Playmates!
This can be an extremely busy time of year for many. Our time can easily be consumed by attending events, traveling and shopping. It can be a lot of fun. But for many, this is not a joyful time of year. Many people carry trauma and resentment around this time of year. Whether it is the shorter days and lack of sunlight that feels biochemically and physically difficult, a resistance to the hustle and bustle or long held memories of discordant family holidays, or even the loss of loved ones, this can be a difficult time of year for many people.
It is important to honor yourself in your own process, whatever that looks and feels like for you.
Sometimes we just need to stay in, snuggled up with a book or a favorite show. It is every bit as appropriate to want to turn Inward, this time of year, as it is to want to gather. Everyone is structured a little differently and there is nothing wrong with you if this time of year makes you want to Hermit, rather than Party. Sometimes its best to party with a journal and cozy blanket to relax and dream!
There are many traditions in many cultures that recognize the importance of honoring the energy that feels inherently potent this time of year. Long before Christianity, pagans celebrated Solstice and Yuletide, a time of gathering but also of Release and Renewal. In many of the global hemispheres, the plant life lays dormant right now, trees bare, roots gathering strength for another year. That may be exactly how you want to treat this time of year as well. You may confuse this desire to turn Inward, with depression or an antisocial attitude, but what may actually be happening for you, if you fall in this category, is that your body is more in tune with the rhythms of Nature!
Our natural bio-rhythms have been so obscured by our busy lifestyles. We live by artificial light, wake to alarm clocks and the majority of us spend nearly all of our time inside and often, in front of screens. I know as someone who works by phone, Skype and in her off time, does a considerable amount of writing, I have to step back and check in with my body and nature, to unplug, go for a walk, go to yoga, stretch on the floor even, something to reconfigure my mind and energetic space.
It is perfectly natural to want to take this time of year to reflect on what you did or did not accomplish in the last year, how you feel in your relationships, what needs your attention to feel complete with the last days of the current year. You may want to make a list of the all the things that you are ready to release, the baggage that you are ready to put down and focus on the clarity that you wish to create with as you prepare to step into the New Year Portal.
It is ok to honor a draw towards darkness and rest, for that is where we do our best healing and for the world over, this has been a very intense year! The energies that have been bestirred, call for our individual and collective attention to healing right now. Allow yourself to engage in that healing however it feels right for you so that as the authentic Spirit of the Holiday Season builds, you may find that you can easily drop what is no longer serving you and step forward willing and able to embody and offer your divine gifts as the Light shines from within and around you.
